I'm currently watching through this anime for the first time, and I'm planning on playing through the dot hack video games once I'm done.
Anysushi here have any experience with this series? I like the character designs a lot.

I had no idea there were games

SIGN has such a good soundtrack. I haven't watched it in years but I have the soundtrack CD and I listen to it a lot.

Yeah, there's 4 of them for the PS2! They all seem interesting, singleplayer games that pretend to be MMOs. I've intentionally kept myself blind on the details of them but they sound super cool.

Don't forget the 3 GU games. Those at least have a remaster with GU Last Recode. For the original 4 games you either gotta pay a lot for real discs or emulate.

I'm planning on emulating them, because I love not spending money!

the games are a slog unless you happen to just really like how it plays and you get really into it.
the maps are all very empty and uninspiring '00s 3d environments (often dungeons, think like dark cloud and stuff)

I watched .hack//SIGN on Toonami in the afternoon and Midnight Run on Cartoon Network in the early 2000s. It was a lot of dialogue for what what usually an action and comedy anime program block, so I imagine it didn't do well in "ratings" however the hell that information was gathered then(no one ever asked me for my opinions).

I loved .hack//SIGN though. The soundtrack, mood, animation style, and characters are unforgettable. If the character design ever looks familiar, that's probably because it was done by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. He designed characters for Gainax including Royal Space Force, Nadia, Neon Genesis Evangelion, FLCL, and Diebuster. He was also an artist on the Daicon IV opening animation.
